This summer I took a PLS course Using Online Primary Sources in the Classroom.  During the class I created a list of websites that are rich in primary documents to enrich our curricula, promote higher order thinking, and appeal to different learning styles.  This is a link to my wiki where I have all these links stored.

I’m sometimes asked common questions about what can and can’t be done in Moodle.

Moodle Question:  Is it possible to make up two or 3 different versions of a test and have moodle randomly select one of the versions for each student?

Answer:

Method 1:
You could create MANY groups of questions, such as
Group “question 1”:
Question 1A
Question 1B
Question 1C
Group “question 2”:
Question 2A
Question 2B
Question 2C
You would then make a quiz, pulling one random question from the “question 1” group, one random question from the “question 2” group, etc.
Advantages:  You get exactly what you want
Disadvantages:  It is a pain in the rear to make so many groups.

Method 2:
You could create separate quizzes and put all of the quizzes on the main page of Moodle.
For each quiz, give a unique name and password protect each quiz.
On 3×5 cards, post the name of the quiz and the password that particular student will be taking.
Shuffle the cards and pass them out.  That should give a random distribution of quizzes and allow only the students into a quiz that should belong.
Advantages:  You get exactly what you want
Disadvantages:  You will have multiple quizzes taking up space on your Moodle page.  Also managing 3×5 cards.

Method 3:
You could create one question that has multiple questions embedded into it – did you get a chance to see the question I sent?  You could create a few of these “monster questions” then create a quiz made of one random “monster question”.  *See below about writing “Monster Questions”
Advantages:  You get exactly what you want
Disadvantages:  A little complex writing the questions.

Method 4:?
The problem is that Moodle doesn’t have a “smart” way to randomly choose questions, it can only choose from a pool.  That is why method 1 creates “mini-pools” to work or Method 2 removes the randomness altogether.  I don’t know of any way to get around this.

Moodle does have a calculation feature which would allow random number generation and the calculation of the final answer.

Here’s a helpful hint when making podcasts for students who either have difficulty speaking or who are afraid to speak to create a podcast.  If you are using Macs, follow these directions.

1. Write the script in Word.
2. Set the preferences for the voice in System Prefs/Speech. You will need to set up a key command to start the Text to Speech and select a voice.
3. Select (highlight) the text to be read.
4. With Garageband open hit Record on the Track in GarageBand
5. Go back to your Word document and start the Speech.

This MacOS app is EXCELLENT for showing 3-d models of countries as relative sizes to each other based upon their various properties, like oil consumption, for example. There are lots of databases for it that you can download, as well. Mac schools - RUSH out to get this one.
